Genre research: Horror
I'm researching the horror genre. A common sound i have seen throughout this genre is incidental music. It's used as a common strategy to build suspense when an intense part of the film is going to happen. Theres also a lot of diegetic ambient sounds used like foot steps. This type sound is used to emphasize simple elements leading up to the climax. Most of these films are shot during the evening and have low lighting throughout many scenes. This creates a frightening effect for the audience by creating an atmosphere thats unknown and open to the unexpected. The most used props throughout this genre include weapons such as knives, guns, and fake blood. These props create a glory scene which is a main element used in horror. The most common settings in horror is a type of home setting or outdoors. These create a real feeling allowing the audience to relate. Tracking shots are very common in all of the films i have seen throughout this genre and is a key way of creating an inclusive film for the audience. Child actors are also very common in horror. They're often used as main characters and have a horrific characteristic added to them. Some horror movies focus on escaping from somebody which does not appeal to me. Others focus on origin stories of a monster or villain which i find to be more appealing and engaging.
