Title Design Research: Romance

The TV show i picked to represent this genre is Bridgerton  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones? There were 12 titles displayed during the opening sequences. Ones for the cast, the screen writer, and the director. 2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do you they make you feel) The images help foreshadow the events of the show and what's going to occur within later episodes. They carry a hint of drama while still including romance. 3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you  tell what genre the film is) Through the design of the images and the very lightweight vibe of the sequence the romance genre can be reinforced. But because of the background music and pacing of the images we can also detect a hint of mystery. 4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? The lighting was very fresh and open which contributed to the lighthearted feel and t

For this genre I picked the opening sequence for the show American Horror Story. 1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones? There are six titles displayed in this opening, 5/7 of those titles are just the cast. 1/7 is the director and the screen writer, and the last title displayed is the title of the show itself. Portraying "AHS, Cult" 2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do you they make you feel) The images displayed were gory. The color scheme was red and yellow, the red signifying blood and the yellow representing the honey bees. even though something like bees shouldn't correlate with horror stories the layout of the different images worked to foreshadow what would later be revealed in the show 3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you  tell what genre the film is) Within the sequence there is an eerie vibe to the layout of the images to the images themselves, to t

There are 16 titles throughout this title sequence. The title's in this film consist of the picture company, production company, film company, film title, the actors, costume designer, music and song artists, music supervisors, co-producers, film editor, production designer, photographer director, executive producers, producers, writers, and directors. The images hold a positive connotation. It consists of trees, leaves, and other elements of nature seen in everyday life. The images of the main character walking through a neighborhood sidewalk is a relatable experience. The cartoon like drawings also have a realistic appeal to them. The film uses costume to relate to the audience. The main character is wearing a casual outfit with worn out shoes which is stereotypical for a teenage girl. There are many different camera angles used that show a different perspective of the character, including eye level and high angle shots. These represent a  different level of power that the main

Art of the title This website specializes is movie title sequences. the homepage of the website first shows a collection of Emmy nominations for main title design. The homepage also has two drop down bars at the top of the screen. When you click these drop down bars your able to uncover the different categories of movie sequences opening. There categorized by genre, off to the side there is a section that has a link that leads to all of the opening sequences on the website. A rundown of the sequences follows afterwards. The rundown discusses schematics, the production team, and how it relates to the plot of whatever piece of film the opening belongs to. Me and Macaria would be using this website to research the different opening sequences for the different genres so that we can get a better understanding of the gen

The first opening sequence i watched is from the horror film "Seven".  The title sequence consists of 16 titles. The title's include of the production group, film title, film director, actors, casting, music, costume designer, editor, production designer, photography director, co-producers, co-executive producers, executive producers, writer, producer and director. The images in this opening sequence carry a mysterious and unsettling connotation. The sequence consists of somebody working on a huge project while crossing out certain words from a book and multiple pictures of people. It gives off the impression that the person is going to hurt them. Theres also props like fake blood and blades used to create this fearful feeling within the audience. The film uses technical codes seen in horror like low lighting and close up camera angles. It also follows symbolic code of horror films by creating a mysterious and suspenseful mood. The main convention that distinguishes horro

Genre research: Eli

Image
For this blog I researched the movie "Eli". this movie focuses on a young boy with a weak immune system who is basically allergic to the world. Because of his condition his parents bring him to a specialist doctor who resides in a secluded area in hopes of finding a cure for him. As the movie progresses the characters discover that the place they're in isn't how they expected, and they discover the secrets of the specialist and her practices. This movie was drama horror, so it had elements of a horror movie as well as of a drama movie. But today I'm going to be focusing on the horror aspect. The movie Eli made use of many over the shoulder shots, as well as many POV shots. This was done so that it could be like the viewer was experiencing the situation firsthand. The film also specifically used headshots whenever the specialist was speaking, this emphasized the fact that the specialist, Dr. Horn, would have some relevance regarding the lab and the secrets. This

Genre research: Get out

Image
Another film that Sarah and I reviewed was the movie get out. This movie centered around a black man who visits the parents of his white girlfriend. Her parents turn out to be keeping a secret that regards the estate and the town itself, but I'm just analyzing the features of the movie. Get out has a lot of headshots and eye level shots. this technique allows the viewer to witness all the emotions that cross a characters face and how the situation can influence their reaction. Not only that but during these scene Chris, the main character, would look directly into the camera, and directly at the viewer. This technique amplified that connection even more, because at times it seemed like he was crying out for help from the audience. This is a skill I want to use in our final task to really evoke emotion from the audience. Unlike in the Eli movie where background music was prioritized, Get out prioritized diegetic sound. For example the movie would increase the volume of Chris'

Genre research: Unfriended

I watched the film "Unfriended" streamed on Netflix. Common costumes throughout this film is casual wear. This makes the film seem more realistic and relatable. Diegetic sound is also common throughout this film. The sound of foot steps and clicking on a computer is used a lot. Incidental Music is also very common. It's used in specific scenes to build tension. The entire movie is filmed at night time and has low lighting. The main prop throughout this film is a computer. A knife and fake blood is also used. Point of view shots are seen many times throughout this film. The entire film is shot from a computer screen which limits the amount of different camera angles used. When it comes to dialogue, a lot of it consisted of verbal commotion between the characters. I like how realistic the "video chat" seemed throughout the entire film. I disliked all of the commotion between the characters because it created a stressful feeling for the audience instead of a feeli

Genre decision blog

We've decided to make our opening sequence using the horror genre. After researching each genre, horror seems to be the best fit. Our pitch is "a girl obsesses over her best friend and watches her every move to figure out how to take over her life". This can fit the description of a villain origin story which is a common plot for horror films. Our pitch allows our opening sequence to create an unsettling feeling for the audience which is a main goal for horror movies. Our opening sequence can also incorporate gory scenes using fake blood, low lighting, and dark figures. It's a plot that starts off relatable and then takes a horrific turn which is common in horror film. Im excited to be working with this genre.

Genre research: Romance

The romance genre specializes in more emotional and affectionate aspects than action or Horror. So rather than focusing on Mis-En-Scene, romance movies focus more on Camera angles, movements and shots, and sound. Many romance movies use close-up shots, POV shots, Over the shoulder shots, and eye level shots. These shots can vary depending on what the romance movie focuses on. But the reason romance movies use such close depictive shots is because romance movies focus on intimate moments that are often portrayed on the face eyes and mouth. Like in the notebook, the camera mainly uses a close up shot to show the emotions crossing the face of the couple and to emphasize the closeness and the impact of the words. Although props and setting are important, for the romance genre me and Mac wouldn't need to invest as much into Mis-En-Scene. This makes this Genre easy to produce because we would just to perfect our Camera work. Romance movies mainly emphasize on dialogue, and non-diegetic

Genre Research: Action

Image
Actions movies focus on combat. Most of these movies include a scene where the protagonist has to choose between staying and fighting, or going home. They're faced with whether to choose freedom and save themselves, or save the others. Even though most actions movies seem like they are about saving the world and cool action scenes. They actually focus on the internal battle the protagonist has with himself. This is one of the elements of Action movies that appeal to me. An example can be found in WW84 where Diana is faced with being selfish and staying with Steve or giving up on him to save the world. In Spider-Man into the spider-verse where miles has to choose between being selfish and only being concerned with himself or becoming Spider-Man and fixing the different universes. Some filming techniques of action movies include Ariel shots, these shots are used to show full coverage of all the damage done during these action movies, or sometimes the severity of the situation our h

I'm researching the horror genre. A common sound i have seen throughout this genre is incidental music. It's used as a common strategy to build suspense when an intense part of the film is going to happen. Theres also a lot of diegetic ambient sounds used like foot steps. This type sound is used to emphasize simple elements leading up to the climax. Most of these films are shot during the evening and have low lighting throughout many scenes. This creates a frightening effect for the audience by creating an atmosphere thats unknown and open to the unexpected. The most used props throughout this genre include weapons such as knives, guns, and fake blood. These props create a glory scene which is a main element used in horror. The most common settings in horror is a type of home setting or outdoors. These create a real feeling allowing the audience to relate. Tracking shots are very common in all of the films i have seen throughout this genre and is a key way of creating an inclus

My pitch

Image
Pitch 1- A girl obsesses over her best friend and watches her every move to figure out how to take over her life.  Pitch 2- A daughter looks up to her mother and her mother ends up being a serial killer the entire time. I would be interested in pitch one because its a complex scandalous story that can fit into a variety of genres. All teenagers go through drama and this film incorporates general teenage drama and takes it to the next level. As teenagers, we have the tools to make this film seem like realistic teenage story. The realistic approach will engage the audience by allowing them to relate to the film. Finding a location for this film will be simple considering its correlation to modern teenage life. Using the skills  from the other projects we've done, this film seems like it will turn out successful. Pitch two was in consideration because it would be simple to get a mother and daughter actor for the film. However, the serial killer part of the film would be hard to repres
